Fan's...Cornelius Bundrage, the IBF light middleweight champion, was hoping that if he dispatched rival Cory Spinks on Saturday night for the second time in his career, his next step would be taking on Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas, in what would easily be the biggest fight of his career.
Looks like "K9" will have to wait a while longer for that matchup.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said Friday that 39-year-old Bundrage would not be Canelo's next opponent.
While Schaefer said he would announce by early next week who Alvarez's Mexican Independence Day weekend opponent would be, welterweight Marcos Maidana tweeted Friday that his next fight would be against Alvarez on Sept. 15. However, Maidana tweeted later Friday that it was only his wish, not reality.
Bundrage, on the other hand, could have a big fight against a tough opponent awaiting him, even if it's not Alvarez.
Schaefer said he would suggest that Bundrage (31-4, 18 KOs), who fights Spinks on Saturday night in Indio, Calif. (Showtime, 9 p.m. ET), next take on Cuban defector Erislandy Lara (16-1-1, 11 KOs), who fights Freddy Hernandez on the same card at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
That is, if both fighters win.
Then, Schaefer said, the winner of that fight could earn the next shot at Alvarez, the 21-year-old Mexican superstar and WBC 154-pound champion who is undefeated at 40-1-1, with 32 KOs.
"Bundrage vs. Lara would be a terrific 154-pound fight," Schaefer said. "I don't like to let fights marinate. I like to make good fights right away.
"We want to keep (Bundrage) busy, we want to showcase him."
Lara could easily be undefeated, suffering his only loss to Paul Williams in Atlantic City last July in a fight most observers scored overwhelmingly for Lara. All three judges were suspended indefinitely after their scoring was revealed.
Bundrage won his title by pounding Spinks into submission in five rounds on Aug. 7, 2010, in Spinks' hometown of St. Louis.
Bundrage also took the title from Spinks, 34, the son of former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks, that night, and still owns it, proudly proclaiming to be the first champion from Detroit's famed Kronk Gym since Thomas Hearns a couple decades ago. He's trained by Manny Steward, who also trained Hearns.
"I'm the only world champion in the city of Detroit right now," Bundrage says. "Not the Detroit Lions, not the Detroit Pistons, not even the Detroit Red Wings. Just Detroit K9, world champion."
Bundrage has defended his title only once, avenging his first career loss to Sechew Powell seven years ago by taking a unanimous decision from Powell a year ago.
Bundrage has not fought since, due to a long-running contract squabble with Don King Productions. Bundrage recently left King for what he terms breach of contract ("actually it was breached twice") and considers himself a free agent.
"King offered me three fights after the contract was breached. I wasn't going to take a fight when I was already out of the contract," he said. "Not only did he offer me fights after the contract was breached, the fights he offered me weren't even worth taking. He wanted me to fight a guy in (the guy's) hometown, and I'm the champ of the world, and the guy wasn't even mandatory to my belt. It didn't make no sense."
Bundrage says he's "very happy" to be away from King, yet holds no grudges.
"I wish (King) the best and I hope he wishes me the best. You know, life goes on. God said if you don't forgive, he won't forgive you," he says. "Don King is still one of the best promoters of all time."
Being a free agent — Bundrage talks about starting his own promotional business, K9 Promotions, when his fighting days are over — is a big reason why Bundrage is fighting on a mostly Golden Boy card against Spinks, who is still with King. Golden Boy won the purse bid for the fight. There's a possibility that Golden Boy could sign him after the fight.
Bundrage takes issue with any suggestions that he might not have the name recognition to be mentioned in the same breath with Alvarez.
"Being on The Contender, Season 2 was one of the biggest things I did in my career. At the time it was behind American Idol, it was the second biggest reality show out there," Bundrage said. "I was real big. People loved me overseas more than they did in America. I went to the UK and the crowd went bananas. They were like, K9, K9!"
One of the highlights of his career, he recalled, was the first time he ever flew in an airplane, in 2002, back when he was "a youngster."
"I fought on a Mike Tyson undercard, when Tyson fought Lennox Lewis in Memphis," he remembered fondly. "And guess who else was on the show? Manny Pacquiao, before people even knew who he was."
A decade later, K9 says his age and year-long layoff will not affect him negatively against Spinks (39-6, 11 KOs.

"I'm a young 39-year-old. I didn't have a whole lot of amateur fights, my body hasn't been beaten, I don't smoke, I don't drink, I live a good Christian life, I don't party at night," Bundrage says. " . . . I have a lot of good years left, I don't know how many more, that's up to God. But, you know, 39 is the new 27."
As for the layoff: "I stay in shape … Of course, you'd be sharper if you were fighting regularly, but I was ready to fight two months ago. I'm in shape, I'm ready."
In his first fight against Spinks, he said Spinks tried to fight him, and in the fifth round, Bundrage dropped Spinks after a barrage against the ropes followed by a hard right hook.
"I think he's going to come out and try to box this time," Bundrage says. "(In the first fight) he tried to fight me, and that didn't go well for him. So I think he's going to try to box at times, but I'm prepared (for either)."
Spinks sees it differently, as expected.
"Spinks is Spinks again. Spinks wasn't Spinks the last time we fought," Spinks said Wednesday. "The first time, I didn't train properly. I was sick. I had no mechanics. I don't care who you are, if you aren't right mentally and physically, you're not going to be able to do anything.
"Fans are going to see the total package on Saturday. I'm ready. I've been blessed with a gift. I didn't have to learn how to box. I always could and I could fight anyway I wanted. I can sit down with you, I can box with you. I will do anything I have to to win this fight."
